Breast Cancer Q & A

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a form of cancer that develops in the breast tissue. It can affect one or both breasts. As the most common cause of cancer in women, early detection is essential for treating this disease. Breast cancer is often treatable when caught early.

At Q&S Surgical, Dr. Quinones and the team use the most advanced diagnostic tools to detect and treat breast cancer before it progresses.

What are the signs of breast cancer?

Breast cancer often causes no symptoms in its early stages. As the disease progresses, you may experience the following:

  • A lump in one or both breasts
  • Dimpling in the nipple or surrounding skin
  • Nipple irritation or flaking skin
  • Swollen breasts
  • Nipple discharge, sometimes mixed with blood
  • Breast pain
  • Changes in the shape or size of the breasts
  • Lump under the armpit

Women with breast cancer may also notice the skin around their breasts thickening. Any changes to the texture or appearance of the skin in this area warrant a comprehensive breast exam.

What causes breast cancer?

Any woman can develop breast cancer, which isn’t always preventable. Most cases of breast cancer affect women over age 50, but younger women are not immune from the disease. The team may perform a risk factor assessment to assess your chances of developing breast cancer. Many common risk factors for breast cancer include:

  • Having the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene
  • Starting menstruation before age 12
  • Having dense breast tissue
  • Having a family history of breast or ovarian cancer
  • Leading a sedentary lifestyle
  • Being pregnant with your first child after the age of 30
  • Consuming alcohol
  • Being overweight

Taking hormone replacement therapy during menopause can also increase your risk of breast cancer.

How is breast cancer diagnosed?

The team may recommend multiple types of testing to diagnose breast cancer. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammography, and ultrasound-guided biopsies are typically the most effective diagnostic tools.

What are the treatments for breast cancer?

The best treatment for breast cancer depends on your specific type and the severity of the disease. At Q&S Surgical, Dr. Quinones and the team specialize in minimally invasive breast cancer surgery. Popular techniques the team may recommend include lymph node-sparing surgery, lumpectomies, biopsies and partial mastectomies.

After reviewing your scans, blood work, and other types of diagnostic testing, Dr. Quinones can recommend the appropriate surgical technique.
